The Mypex Experiment - Birchfields Park Forest Garden event
Sun, 18/04/2010 - 13:20 — Rob
Manchester Permaculture Network's April event is to take place at Birchfields Park Forest Garden.Last year an experimental planting was undertaken in the south west corener of the forest garden, using mypex, to test its effectiveness at weed control, in the establishment of the forest garden's gound cover layers. On the evening of Weds 28th, we will be returning to the forest garden, to see how things have progressed.
The evening is also a special occasion because we will be saying farewell to Kelda and Simon, who ae leaving the region and making a new start in Argile. The practical forest gardening session will therefore be followed by a ew drinks at Hardy's Well at the bottom end of the curry mile. We look forward to seeing you all there, and getting our hands dirty, and giving Kelda and Simon a good send of. |

In the mypex covered area we introduced patches of pairs of complementary plants (clumping and spreading) in order to establish guilds, they were: lemon balm and creeping comfrey; mints and yarrows; alliums and beach strawberry; chard/dandelion (which we knew would be there and is prolific) and clover/birdsfoot trefoil; chicory and rubus; and wild garlic/woodruff and kale. We also tried out celeriac along the outer edge and put in some feverfew, lavender and hyssop at other edges of the area. Now some patches seem to need the mypex removed and gaps need filling... Also the Mirabella Cherry tree needs replacing and the Bay and Cornelian Cherry are not doing well. A few of us like the more open southerly approach but also want a more complete the circle of trees. So it is a good time to review plans from the design day and its follow up by those who have been tending the Garden.
Hoping to see you there and that you can make something good with dandelion flowers!
with all best wishes from
