Land Army Needs You!

(originally posted as an event which took place on July 6th 2011)

Do you fancy learning some new farming skills; spending half a day on a beautiful farm with a nice bunch of people; helping out local farmers, and being part of a wider movement to increase sustainable food production around the City?

Then Greater Manchester's Land Army is just the thing for you!

We are looking for volunteers to trial this exciting new project with us. Working with four local organic growers, this first outing will be doing a range of urgent tasks, from a 'hoe down' to raspberry picking, at a time when farmers are struggling with the challenges the weather has thrown up.

Obviously, the more one person takes, the less there is for others; but because there's a natural limit to how much any individual would actually pick; and because people passing by might frown at anyone trying to load a truck with the berries, we can all continue to enjoy this resource. We know that people are becoming increasingly concerned with where their food comes from, how it is grown, how it gets to their plates, and food waste in general. We share those concerns, which are the basis for our enterprise.

We believe that local food matters. It reconnects people to the land and each other. It creates opportunities for communities to build skills, trading systems, networks and resilience. Local food and its redistribution can have many benefits for the local economy, community regeneration, health and the environment.
